About Spontaneous Tomato
This is the website of someone who loves to eat. Cooking makes me happy too, but it’s secondary in my mind to the eating.
I cook what I’m craving. As you can imagine, I now have quite the collection of spices and sauces on hand in my kitchen cabinets. (In particular, I have a bit of an Asian condiment and snack-buying problem…) I also eat out in restaurants. A lot. But there is nothing more enjoyable than sitting down, with friends, to a sizzling dinner or a fresh, colorful brunch that you’ve prepared yourself at home.
I love to cook with friends, with music, and with an often-forgotten glass of wine on the counter. I don’t really love to cook with recipes, but I’ll try my best to measure or guesstimate the ingredients I use, just for you.
This is also the website of someone who loves to travel. I’ve eaten pizza in Brazil, curry in New Zealand, and pancakes in Cambodia. I lived briefly in Spain and South Korea, and for a few years in Japan, so most of my travels have been in Asia and Europe. I plan to share a smattering of food photos from my traveling adventures here, mixed in among the recipes.
My obsession with food:
I lived in Japan before the era of Top Chef, cupcakeries, food trucks with twitter feeds, and cooking blogs with cookbook spin-offs, but Japan was way ahead of the curve: it seemed to me that every time I turned on the television there, a food show was on. And not just a Julia Child-style how-to-cook show; a zoomed in close-up (part hedonistic, part sadistic) cook-off or taste-test or speed-eating contest or restaurant review, replete with backstories and lush images of every ingredient, and with famous TV personalities sighing, oishisou! (looks delicious!), umai! (yum!), or karai! (spicy!).
Something about Japan’s national food obsession, and the way nearly EVERYTHING looks and tastes so delectable there, made me a little obsessed with food myself. (Once, on a ten-day trip to Singapore, I kept a travel-log and wrote down everything I ate, rather than everything I did.)
I started taking food photographs too, just for the record… In the U.S., I used to feel a bit embarrassed taking photos of what I was about to eat; in Japan, I’ve always been in good company.

Eating Nakji-Bokum (Korean Spicy Stir-Fried Octopus) at an outdoor food stall in Namdaemun Market, Seoul, South Korea.
About my cooking:
All of this has made me an adventurous and enthusiastic eater. I’ve tried—and enjoyed—raw fugu (potentially poisonous blowfish) in Japan and squid cooked in their own ink in the Basque Country.
Some of my cooking is in pursuit of re-creating something scrumptious I have eaten on my travels. The rest might be simply whatever I’m feeling like at the moment, or inspired by a new gift for my kitchen, or a Farmer’s Market produce purchase.
I don’t bake much. I most certainly have nothing against eating baked goods; it’s just my reluctance to follow recipes and measure things. (I hope with this website, though, that will start to change.)
I don’t eat pork or beef (for no particular reason other than 20 years of habit, but this might change, too…).
I don’t have many fancy kitchen gadgets, but I absolutely love my cast iron pan (an excellent gift from a friend!). I was once intimidated by the complicated-seeming care instructions, but now I’m thoroughly converted, and I use it to make huevos rancheros or fried eggs nearly every morning. I also love going thrift-store shopping in search of new (old) dishes.
A little more about me:
I’m a language nerd. I speak Japanese and Spanish, and I’m studying Korean and Arabic. (I also know a tiny bit of some other Romance languages and ASL, and would like to learn more.) I use the life-changing (and free) Anki to study language flashcards.
I was born in the great food city of Madison, Wisconsin, then spent some time living in Philadelphia and western Japan, before moving to southern California. (While in Philly, I occasionally wrote food blog posts for Uwishunu, the Official Tourism Blog of Philadelphia. You can find my archived uwishunu posts here.)
My wife’s name is Paula. She’s a certified ophthalmic assistant. She bakes all of the bread around here, and sometimes writes guest posts like this one.
I’m not a morning person, but brunch is my favorite meal.
I have a special fondness for tomatoes, eggs, and cilantro.
Some of my favorite foods to make (and eat) are:
huevos rancheros, oyako-donburi (Japanese chicken and egg over rice), kimchi fried rice, poached eggs over sautéed kale, chana masala, saag paneer, mango lassi, gazpacho soup, pita chips, vegetarian sushi, Thai yellow curry, tom kha gai soup, avocado tomato toast, and blueberry muffins.
Some of my favorite things to eat that I would like to learn to make (better/more often) are:
crepes, Vietnamese spring rolls, chicken mole, malai kofta (Indian curry with cheese and vegetable dumplings), samosas, pad thai, sashimi, agedashi-tofu (Japanese deep-fried tofu in ginger broth), steamed shrimp dumplings, pickled tomatoes, chilaquiles, eggs benedict, and lemon bars.
I hope to cook my way through these recipes and more, while sharing my kitchen successes, failures, and tips with you. I hope to hear from you, too: I welcome your comments on recipes if you have questions or suggestions of your own!
Happy cooking!
Allison
Love your blog!
Thanks!
It is nice to see a fellow traveler in the world of food blogs!
I think traveling and food are practically synonymous. : )
Its nice to see someone who enjoys all types of food. I did sign up.
Thanks and welcome! (And yes, I pretty much enjoy eating everything, with special love for spicy foods… It’s actually a miracle that I managed to list my favorite foods in such a small space.)
Hi,
We seem to have a similar taste in food…looking at your favourite dishes, although the blueberry muffins and lemon bars I would pass on. Thought you might like to have a peek at my blog as there may possibly be a few recipes you’d like to cook. Am enjoying browsing around your blog.
I agree! And your blog is absolutely lovely… I followed it yesterday, but it slipped my mind to come back to this page and respond to your comment. Thanks so much for stopping by! : )
What fun to stumble on your blog tonight via Freshly Pressed, congratulations! It’s always a delight to find another well-traveled palate. :)
Thanks for stopping by! I just followed your blog too : )
You have inspired me to make (and post about) my childhood favorite – Creamsicles! With summer upon us I am tempted by all things cold so I have been trying to rework old favorites to something healthier.
http://tempisfugit.wordpress.com/2012/05/25/remaking-a-childhood-favorite/
Awesome! I like creamsicles, too. I’ll definitely check out your post.
All your recipes look great! Nice Work.
Thank you! It’s nice to hear such positive feedback.
OMG You have an amazing blog! Your food choices all seem to be healthy. With regards to green salad, I’m familiar only with one type, which I eat: Caesar salad (lame I know! :0). I’m not a very adventurous eater. Although I love veggies and greens, I don’t really eat them extensively. But your pictures are just way too amazing to make me almost crave to taste and try them out!
Thank you! It’s so nice to get such enthusiastic comments : )
There’s nothing wrong with a yummy Caesar salad every once in a while, but from my perspective, it’s sad that you’re missing out on a zillion other salad variations… You could start by swapping in some darker greens like spinach, and using nuts instead of croutons.
(Then if you went even further and replaced the creamy dressing with a balsamic vinaigrette and tossed some fruit or avocado on top, you’d have one of my favorite salads!)
Oh my that sounds delicious! I’ll see what I can come up with. I’ll keep your suggestions in mind. =)
ah to once again walk the farmers market in madison sampling cheese curds and other goodies
grandma
Grandma, I hope we can go back to the farmer’s market together sometime! (Or we’ll just have to fly out there with some Wisconsin cheese curds packed in a cooler…)
I really enjoy reading your blog. Your writing and insight is great. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate hearing that people are enjoying my blog! It’s totally fun for me to spend so much time creating it, but it also feels more worth it when I can tell that others enjoy it too.

Allison- I was just reading your page and saw that you’re from Madison. I lived there for a couple of years- its a great town! Love your blog, I’m inspired to add an Asian flair to some of my dishes now!
Awesome! Madison is the bessssst…. especially food-wise. I’m looking forward to going back there for a week in December. (Well, looking forward to everything except the weather!)
I totally agree about the food- that might be what I miss the most! Any city that has an annual event called Brat Fest = amazing in my eyes!
Haha, I agree, and I don’t even eat brats! I love the farmer’s market and the cheese curds (and the beer).
Allison I love your blogs and would like to present you the Sunshine Award. Follow this link for more details. https://soulofspice.wordpress.com/2012/11/16/happy-friday-and-the-sunshine-award/

Yay, thank you!
Hey Allison! Thanks so much for following my blog. I love the idea of set posting days. It seems like it would take the pressure of daily blogging off of your shoulders. Anyway, thanks again. I can’t wait to see what else you post.
Thanks for stopping by! And yes, it’s been a great motivator to have a regular posting schedule– otherwise I’m not sure how I’d ever manage to make enough time to write any new posts! And this way people know when to come back and check for new recipes. :)
Hi Allison – thanks for following me! I love your blog, and tomatoes are one of my very favourite things, I am looking forward to reading more!
Thanks, Sarah! I’m glad we share a love of tomatoes. And thanks for following me back! :)
Hi Allison, I’ve nominated you for the Sunshine Award! No pressure to accept – the award is just to let you know that I enjoy reading your blog :)

Yay! Thank you, Hannah! :)
Hello Allison, Thank you for stopping by and following Ancestreats! We are excited to see more of your food adventures and smattering of posts. And, when you prepare family favorites, we welcome you to share with the Ancestreats community.
Thanks for stopping by my blog as well! :)
I looove the recipes in your blog. How I wish I could cook all of them. I’m sure hubby would be pleased. ^^
I hope you don’t mind, I have nominated you for the VERSATILE BLOGGER AWARD. Here’s the link, should you accept the nomination/award: http://chrissantosra.wordpress.com/2013/01/31/whee-an-award/.
Take care! More power to your blog. ^^
Thank you so much! Anyone who wishes me “more power to your blog” is very welcome to stop by any time! ^^ Hope you get to try lots of the recipes!
I lived in Okinawa for over a year and miss the food! Your blog is making me hungry : ) Do you know how to make yakisoba? I loved that! Great blog!!
Thank you! You’re lucky to have lived in Okinawa! I only visited there once for less than a week (but during the rainy season in June).
Hm, I don’t think I’ve made yakisoba, but I’ve made Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki before, which usually has that type of soba noodles in it… For now the closest thing on my blog to yakisoba is actually Korean jap chae (not the same thing, but similar ingredients), but I will add it to my “to-cook” list for sure! :)
Hi Thanks a lot for visiting my blog. I finally visited your blog. Your blog is lovely. The photos are great. I can see you have passion for food. By the way, are you on gluten-free diet? My husband is.
Thank you so much! I really enjoy your blog too; it makes me feel so 懐かしい for Japan… I’m not actually on a gluten-free diet, but I try to label my gluten-free recipes for the convenience of interested readers, and we’ve baked some gluten-free desserts in the past for friends with that eating restriction who were coming over for dinner parties.
I can see a lot of your recipes are naturally gluten-free. I like eating gluten-free food myself. Somehow my stomach feels lighter and better than when I eat wheat. Actually my younger son developed a gluten-free food search website. If you don’t mind it, I would greatly appreciate it if you could pass along the URL of the website. It’s a good website: http://www.gfoverflow.com He also sells apps for iPhones and iPads. (Sorry, I hope I am not being too aggressive) :)
No problem! I’ll leave the link visible in your comment so that others can click through to check it out. :)
Thank you so much \(^^)/
Hi Allison, I love your blog and have nominated it for the Sunshine Award. Check details here, http://soulofspice.wordpress.com/2013/03/03/appreciation-5-awards/ cheers, charu
Thank you, Charu!
Hey,
Congratulations, I have nominated you for the ‘Sunshine Award’
Claim it here-> http://gypsyfoods.wordpress.com/2013/03/23/happy-birthday-celebrating-with-awards/
Keep up the blogging,
Good Luck
:)
Thanks so much! I’ll go check it out now. :)
Wow, you are quite the traveler! I have only been to a few places. But my bucket lists of places to visit are mostly inspired by my desire to eat the food, haha!
We share the same travel goals, then! Two years ago, I submitted an abstract and presented a paper at a linguistics conference in Taipei, Taiwan, just so I could go there to eat dumplings! :)
Oh oh oh. I just commented on your blood orange recipe as I’ve excitedly just found your blog somehow in the plethora of foodie blogs out there. Then I come to this page and realise you are of the same lady loving persuasion (hmmm that sounds a bit creepy sorry). Anyway, moving right on, my blog is hopefully going to be ‘our’ blog when my wife starts blogging too. So far I just write up her recipes as she’s been too lazy / busy. The blogs an ode to showing how we love each other and our families etc – using food as the medium to share that love. Hope to see you drop by, I’m about to follow yours right now.
Haha, that’s awesome. So glad you somehow found my blog. And yep, my blog too is becoming more of a shared venture with my fiancée, Paula, since recently it seems like half the posts are either her guest posts that she’s written, or her recipes that I’ve written up! :)
Love your blog! Awesome pictures too!
Thanks so much! :)
Hey! Thanks for checking out Butter&Yolk. I went to UARTS in Philly and have lots of friends still there! My husband went to UWMadison and we travel there a lot..Madison has a great food scene. I lived in LA for a year or so, too! We have a lot in common. Japan is where my husband and I would like to travel next…so I will need to write you when we decide to make the trip! Looking forward to more posts.
That’s so cool; we really do have a ton of places in common! I don’t know much about LA (other than it’s much warmer and has way better food than Santa Barbara), but I definitely love & miss (the food scenes in) Philly and Madison.
I would be more than happy to give you Japan tips for places to go and things to eat, whenever you and your husband are planning to travel there! Thanks so much for stopping by and following! :)
Allison, I nominated the Spontaneous Tomato for a Very Inspiring Blogger Award! Please feel no obligation to respond, but just know that your blog is read and enjoyed. You can read about your nomination in my post: http://travelgardeneat.com/2013/05/01/blowin-in-the-wind-or-where-do-all-the-bloggers-go/
Thanks so much, Kat! :) I appreciate it!
i’m glad to find your blog. If you enjoy Nakji-bokkeum, then you’re almost an Korean. ^^
Haha, thanks, Jessie! ^ ^ It’s definitely an honor to be called “almost a Korean.” Thanks for checking out my blog!
Hi Allison! Thanks for stopping by Soup and Such! I love the name of your blog. Now I’m off to peruse some of your recipes! :-)
Thanks for stopping by my blog, too… welcome! :)
Hi Allison. I stopped by and visited your blog the other day and really liked your beet hummus recipe! You have such a fine blog. And you are quite worldly too! :) I look forward to reading more! Also, thank you for visiting and following my blog!
Thank you for following my blog as well! Yours is lovely– your recipes all seem so elegantly simple yet appetizing. :)
Hi Allison! Thank you so much for checking out my blog and for your lovely comments. I’ve been poking around your blog, and you’re quite the cook chica!! And I know you’re a “real” cook, because you’re not big on recipes. “Real” cooks just create as they go, which I think is awesome! I’m not a real cook, by the way, I rely on recipes. But I’m cooking more these days, so maybe I’ll become a “real” cook one of these days. Cheers! Celeste:)
Thanks, Celeste! I appreciate you taking the time to look around and commenting. I think whether you’re a “real” cook or not is entirely up to how you define it yourself– in other words, you could totally call yourself a real cook, too! I mean, for one thing, you also have a food blog! :)
Haha – I suppose I do!
You truly have a beautiful blog with very interesting recipes and very detailed step-by-step instructions. Thank you for liking my posts and thanks for the follow too. I look forward to reading your posts. Have a wonderful day! I love eating too…and I speak five languages…
Thank you, Liz! It seems like we have a lot in common. Well, I wish I could say that I spoke five languages, but it’s more like three and a half languages on any given day… :)
loving your blog!!! thanks for stopping by mine so I can discover yours :)
Thank you! (And thanks so much for coming to check out my blog, too! :)
Allison: We have another thing in common besides being foodies! I lived in Wisconsin for years before moving to Thailand (by way of Illinois). My husband and I met when we were students at Marquette. He still follows the Packers. Thanks for following my blog! Walk good, Joanie.
Thanks for your comment, Joanie! I’ve actually never been to Marquette if you can believe it… but so cool that you’ve lived in Wisconsin, too! Where in Thailand did/do you live?
Your blog is fantastic. I think I’ve found my food twin!
Yay, thanks! I’m honored to be food twins with you. :)
What a great blog!! I can’t wait to try some of these amazing recipes.
Thank you so much for sharing!!
Thanks for stopping by and following!
Thanks for checking out my blog and for all the likes! Much appreciated. Love your blog! Awesome recipes and the pictures are great! Looking forward to your future posts :)
Thank you! Your pictures are great, too! Our taste in food/recipes definitely overlaps. :)
Absolutely, it’s great when you find a blog that shares your approach to cooking. My little blog is still only young, not even a been up a month yet! Looking forward to sharing my thoughts and recipes for a long time to come though.
Yes, I’m looking forward to seeing them! (My blog’s almost two years old, but I often feel like it’s still very young, too!)
wow dude, i’m inspired. i’m living in japan right now, and was born and raised in the midwest (hometown of st. louis, missouri, went to school in beloit, wi). i have a feeling i’m gonna be reading your blog a lot in the near future…
keep up the awesome work, loving your posts so far.
Cool, I’m so happy to hear that! And totally jealous that you’re living in Japan right now– I miss it like crazy. So cool that you went to school in Beloit (my mom did, too!). Thanks so much for reading & following.

Hi Allison! What an amazing blog you have! I hopped over straight after reading your comment on mine, and I’m loving this space! following you from Buenos Aires!
Hi Felicia, thanks so much for coming to check out my blog, too! I’m definitely going to have to stop by yours more often, since there’s a lot of good stuff in your recipe index. And welcome! Super cool that you’re living in Buenos Aires now. I’ve never been there, but I’ve been to Mendoza, Argentina (and to Singapore!). :)

Wow! I can’t believe I never saw your blog before this :) It is amazing! I lived in Korea for one year and I’ll never look at food the same haha~ I cook more than I eat and I always want to blog about it but somehow it never gets to the actual website! Definitely going to try out some of your recipes soon… or all of your recipes ;)
Hi Kerry, thanks so much for checking out my recipes and taking the time to comment! :) It’s nice to meet a fellow blogger who’s also lived in Korea. (Were you in Seoul or somewhere else?) I hope you do get a chance to try some (or all) of my recipes. :) Looking forward to seeing some Korean-inspired recipes from you, too!
I too am interested in traveling (I haven’t been to nearly as many places as you mentioned, but many of them are my dream destinations!) I look forward to seeing some interesting recipes on your blog!
Thanks, Sabine! Let me know when you’re finally headed to some of those dream destinations and if I’ve been there, I’ll be happy to give you some travel tips! Thanks for stopping by and commenting. :)
Wonderful! (Though your language skills shame me.) Looking forward to following along.
Thanks for coming over to check out my blog, Michelle! My language skills are pretty darn rusty right now, if that makes you feel any better—I guess my hobbies have been gradually shifting from flashcards to food blogs… :)
