About Spontaneous Tomato

This is the website of someone who loves to eat. Cooking makes me happy too, but it’s secondary in my mind to the eating.

I cook what I’m craving. As you can imagine, I now have quite the collection of spices and sauces on hand in my kitchen cabinets. (In particular, I have a bit of an Asian condiment and snack-buying problem…) I also eat out in restaurants. A lot. But there is nothing more enjoyable than sitting down, with friends, to a sizzling dinner or a fresh, colorful brunch that you’ve prepared yourself at home.

I love to cook with friends, with music, and with an often-forgotten glass of wine on the counter. I don’t really love to cook with recipes, but I’ll try my best to measure or guesstimate the ingredients I use, just for you.

This is also the website of someone who loves to travel. I’ve eaten pizza in Brazil, curry in New Zealand, and pancakes in Cambodia. I lived briefly in Spain and South Korea, and for a few years in Japan, so most of my travels have been in Asia and Europe. I plan to share a smattering of food photos from my traveling adventures here, mixed in among the recipes.

My obsession with food:
I lived in Japan before the era of Top Chef, cupcakeries, food trucks with twitter feeds, and cooking blogs with cookbook spin-offs, but Japan was way ahead of the curve: it seemed to me that every time I turned on the television there, a food show was on. And not just a Julia Child-style how-to-cook show; a zoomed in close-up (part hedonistic, part sadistic) cook-off or taste-test or speed-eating contest or restaurant review, replete with backstories and lush images of every ingredient, and with famous TV personalities sighing, oishisou! (looks delicious!), umai! (yum!), or karai! (spicy!).

Something about Japan’s national food obsession, and the way nearly EVERYTHING looks and tastes so delectable there, made me a little obsessed with food myself. (Once, on a ten-day trip to Singapore, I kept a travel-log and wrote down everything I ate, rather than everything I did.)

I started taking food photographs too, just for the record… In the U.S., I used to feel a bit embarrassed taking photos of what I was about to eat; in Japan, I’ve always been in good company.

Eating Nakji-Bokum (Korean Spicy Stir-Fried Octopus) at an outdoor food stall in Namdaemun Market, Seoul, South Korea.

About my cooking:
All of this has made me an adventurous and enthusiastic eater. I’ve tried—and enjoyed—raw fugu (potentially poisonous blowfish) in Japan and squid cooked in their own ink in the Basque Country.

Some of my cooking is in pursuit of re-creating something scrumptious I have eaten on my travels. The rest might be simply whatever I’m feeling like at the moment, or inspired by a new gift for my kitchen, or a Farmer’s Market produce purchase.

I don’t bake much. I most certainly have nothing against eating baked goods; it’s just my reluctance to follow recipes and measure things. (I hope with this website, though, that will start to change.)

I don’t eat pork or beef (for no particular reason other than 20 years of habit, but this might change, too…).

I don’t have many fancy kitchen gadgets, but I absolutely love my cast iron pan (an excellent gift from a friend!). I was once intimidated by the complicated-seeming care instructions, but now I’m thoroughly converted, and I use it to make huevos rancheros or fried eggs nearly every morning. I also love going thrift-store shopping in search of new (old) dishes.

A little more about me:
I’m a language nerd. I speak Japanese and Spanish, and I’m studying Korean and Arabic. (I also know a tiny bit of some other Romance languages and ASL, and would like to learn more.) I use the life-changing (and free) Anki to study language flashcards.

I was born in the great food city of Madison, Wisconsin, then spent some time living in Philadelphia and western Japan, before moving to southern California. (While in Philly, I occasionally wrote food blog posts for Uwishunu, the Official Tourism Blog of Philadelphia. You can find my archived uwishunu posts here.)

My wife’s name is Paula. She’s a certified ophthalmic assistant. She bakes all of the bread around here, and sometimes writes guest posts like this one.

I’m not a morning person, but brunch is my favorite meal.

I have a special fondness for tomatoes, eggs, and cilantro.

Some of my favorite foods to make (and eat) are:

huevos rancheros, oyako-donburi (Japanese chicken and egg over rice), kimchi fried rice, poached eggs over sautéed kale, chana masala, saag paneer, mango lassi, gazpacho soup, pita chips, vegetarian sushi, Thai yellow curry, tom kha gai soup, avocado tomato toast, and blueberry muffins.

Some of my favorite things to eat that I would like to learn to make (better/more often) are:

crepes, Vietnamese spring rolls, chicken mole, malai kofta (Indian curry with cheese and vegetable dumplings), samosas, pad thai, sashimi, agedashi-tofu (Japanese deep-fried tofu in ginger broth), steamed shrimp dumplings, pickled tomatoes, chilaquiles, eggs benedict, and lemon bars.

I hope to cook my way through these recipes and more, while sharing my kitchen successes, failures, and tips with you. I hope to hear from you, too: I welcome your comments on recipes if you have questions or suggestions of your own!

Happy cooking!

Allison

OMG You have an amazing blog! Your food choices all seem to be healthy. With regards to green salad, I’m familiar only with one type, which I eat: Caesar salad (lame I know! :0). I’m not a very adventurous eater. Although I love veggies and greens, I don’t really eat them extensively. But your pictures are just way too amazing to make me almost crave to taste and try them out!

Thank you! It’s so nice to get such enthusiastic comments : )

There’s nothing wrong with a yummy Caesar salad every once in a while, but from my perspective, it’s sad that you’re missing out on a zillion other salad variations… You could start by swapping in some darker greens like spinach, and using nuts instead of croutons.
(Then if you went even further and replaced the creamy dressing with a balsamic vinaigrette and tossed some fruit or avocado on top, you’d have one of my favorite salads!)

Thank you! You’re lucky to have lived in Okinawa! I only visited there once for less than a week (but during the rainy season in June).

Hm, I don’t think I’ve made yakisoba, but I’ve made Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki before, which usually has that type of soba noodles in it… For now the closest thing on my blog to yakisoba is actually Korean jap chae (not the same thing, but similar ingredients), but I will add it to my “to-cook” list for sure! :)

Thank you so much! I really enjoy your blog too; it makes me feel so 懐かしい for Japan… I’m not actually on a gluten-free diet, but I try to label my gluten-free recipes for the convenience of interested readers, and we’ve baked some gluten-free desserts in the past for friends with that eating restriction who were coming over for dinner parties.

I can see a lot of your recipes are naturally gluten-free. I like eating gluten-free food myself. Somehow my stomach feels lighter and better than when I eat wheat. Actually my younger son developed a gluten-free food search website. If you don’t mind it, I would greatly appreciate it if you could pass along the URL of the website. It’s a good website: http://www.gfoverflow.com He also sells apps for iPhones and iPads. (Sorry, I hope I am not being too aggressive) :)

Wow, you are quite the traveler! I have only been to a few places. But my bucket lists of places to visit are mostly inspired by my desire to eat the food, haha!

We share the same travel goals, then! Two years ago, I submitted an abstract and presented a paper at a linguistics conference in Taipei, Taiwan, just so I could go there to eat dumplings! :)

Oh oh oh. I just commented on your blood orange recipe as I’ve excitedly just found your blog somehow in the plethora of foodie blogs out there. Then I come to this page and realise you are of the same lady loving persuasion (hmmm that sounds a bit creepy sorry). Anyway, moving right on, my blog is hopefully going to be ‘our’ blog when my wife starts blogging too. So far I just write up her recipes as she’s been too lazy / busy. The blogs an ode to showing how we love each other and our families etc – using food as the medium to share that love. Hope to see you drop by, I’m about to follow yours right now.

Haha, that’s awesome. So glad you somehow found my blog. And yep, my blog too is becoming more of a shared venture with my fiancée, Paula, since recently it seems like half the posts are either her guest posts that she’s written, or her recipes that I’ve written up! :)

Hey! Thanks for checking out Butter&Yolk. I went to UARTS in Philly and have lots of friends still there! My husband went to UWMadison and we travel there a lot..Madison has a great food scene. I lived in LA for a year or so, too! We have a lot in common. Japan is where my husband and I would like to travel next…so I will need to write you when we decide to make the trip! Looking forward to more posts.

That’s so cool; we really do have a ton of places in common! I don’t know much about LA (other than it’s much warmer and has way better food than Santa Barbara), but I definitely love & miss (the food scenes in) Philly and Madison.

I would be more than happy to give you Japan tips for places to go and things to eat, whenever you and your husband are planning to travel there! Thanks so much for stopping by and following! :)

Hi Allison! Thank you so much for checking out my blog and for your lovely comments. I’ve been poking around your blog, and you’re quite the cook chica!! And I know you’re a “real” cook, because you’re not big on recipes. “Real” cooks just create as they go, which I think is awesome! I’m not a real cook, by the way, I rely on recipes. But I’m cooking more these days, so maybe I’ll become a “real” cook one of these days. Cheers! Celeste:)

Thanks, Celeste! I appreciate you taking the time to look around and commenting. I think whether you’re a “real” cook or not is entirely up to how you define it yourself– in other words, you could totally call yourself a real cook, too! I mean, for one thing, you also have a food blog! :)
